May 2018: What I’ve Been Up To

Most of my May wasn’t too terribly interesting, as I continued living and working in the suburbs of Jakarta. Highlights from the first part of the month included watching Deadpool 2 and Solo, visiting a few new malls, and eating some good vegan food.

Photo Essay: In Praise of Indonesian Teh

Tea Field

The first time that Josh and I got out of the Jakarta area was when we went to Bandung on Christmas. We’d just spent a morning trekking around a volcano when our driver suggested that we make a stop at the nearby tea plantation.

Josh’s Bali Pick: Tirta Gangga

Tirta Gangga

I am extraordinarily lucky to have found a travel partner that I get along so well with. Josh and I are an excellent match, and I’ve never had such a good time traveling with someone as I have with him. What works so well when we go on trips is that I’m a detail-obsessed planner, and Josh really just wants to show up somewhere new and take photos. This means that he gives me free reign to plan whatever I want for each trip that we go on, and then he gets to be surprised at everything.

Monkeying around in Ubud

After arriving in Bali late on a Saturday night, Molly, Josh, and I got a good night of rest with the intention of just relaxing the next day. The manager of our villa, however, had different plans. We woke up to a pancake breakfast the next morning, and before we had time to object, he loaded us into the shuttle that took us to the Monkey Forest in Ubud.

Monthly Update: June 2014

Indonesian Puppets

I opted to skip last month’s update since I spent most of May in bed with dengue fever and didn’t get to see very much of Indonesia except for the inside of a hospital. I was back on my feet for most of June, so here’s what I got up to this month.

Going Batty in Bali

Bat Cave Temple

When it comes to animals, I’m not much of a zoo person or pet lover, but I absolutely love seeing creatures in their natural habitats. After time constraints caused me to ditch my plan to go to Komodo Island to see the dragons and giant bats, I decided to make it my mission to find some bats in Bali. And find them I did.

Baliday 2014

It’s been a week since Josh, Molly, and I flew back into Jakarta after ten days in Bali. We all enjoyed having the time to relax, explore, eat, and spend our holiday time together. And yet, there were many things about the place that baffled us just as much as the rest of Indonesia has. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting in more depth about our trip, but here is a summary of some of the things that stood out most to me as we made our way around the island.
